Brief History

For those of you familiar with the Muaythai scene in Singapore, you would have heard of Hilltop Muay Thai. It is founded by the legendary Ajarhn Johnnie Yeo. Hilltop remains as one of the top Muaythai clubs in Singapore and is renowned for producing strong, powerful Muaythai boxers who hit like mules. Famous retired fighters like Terence Cheah continue to inspire the younger generation to better themselves.

Hilltop has its humble beginnings when Ajarhn Johnnie Yeo returned from Thailand and was looking for a place to train. He came upon the Bukit Batok War Memorial and decided that this resting place of so many fallen warriors was the place to practice his Muay Boran and Muaythai skills. Soon words traveled that Johnnie had returned from Thailand and his friends and other martial artists came to request if they could train together. Before long, parents started bringing their problem kids to him so he could instill some discipline and humility in them. Today many of these former delinquents are still around. Some became top fighters; others found their place in society. What they have in common is their love for this friendly old man who showed them love, compassion and hope when others had given up on them. Of course part of the respect comes from the fact that Ajarhn Johnnie is still fighting fit and also one of the last men on earth they would ever like to meet in the ring.

Today, Hilltop Muay Thai, after 30 years, has opened its very own brand in the city and affectionately calls it, Hilltop “THE GYM” . Hilltop “THE GYM”, concentrates on providing its members in the city with an environment that promotes fun and fitness programs but at the same time retaining the legacy of Hilltop Muay Thai. Hilltop Muay Thai remains the Fighter / Competition Division of Hilltop “THE GYM”. The training is extreme and goes beyond general fitness training. Trainees are also instilled with the Ancient Warrior Codes to prepare them psychologically for competition. Hilltop's philosophy has always been to pit their fighters against others who have higher rankings. This we believe is the best way to achieve better personal growth.
